汉语中,though(although)和but往往都翻译为‘但是’或者‘尽管’,貌似两者为同义词。其实不然。

首先,两者引出的从句的重要性完全不同。Though引出的是次要观点,起着削弱前述观点的作用;而but则引出主要观点。例如:

(a) I would follow you anywhere in the world you’d care to go. But I don’t trust you. 这里的重点是不信任,所以不会去。

(b) I would follow you anywhere in the world you’d care to go, though I don’t trust you. 这里的重点是会去,尽管存在不信任。

其次,though常常放在句末,而but则不会如此。例如:

Jane used to live next door to us. I haven‘t seen her in years, though.

第三,though置于句末还可以起强调作用,但although不可以置于句末。例如:

Aren’t you the clever little devil, though!

第四,如果though表示although或even though【比although语气强】的意思,也就是despite the fact that的含义,它应该放在句首,起到对比作用。例如:

Although it was raining, we went for a walk.

第五,在although和but都用于对比的情况下,although从句不能与主句调换位置【两部分不对等】,但although从句本身可以前置或后置,而but从句则可以【当然,强调重点也调换了】。例如:

(a) Although it was raining, we went for a walk. 但不能说Although we went for a walk, it was raining.【逻辑上不通,因为rain不可能考虑walk这一事实】。可以说We went for a walk, although it was raining.

(b) It was raining, but we went for a walk. 【重点是去散步】 We went for a walk, but it was raining. 【重点是下雨了】

第六,though为although的非正式说法。

最后,一句话里头用了though(although)就不要再用but。两者同时使用是国人使用英语的常见错误之一。例如:

Although she was not feeling well, but she went to work.

【可以去掉任何一个,但强调重点有所不同】
