1.明确主干
英文多长句，中文多短句。英译中时需要首先确定句子主干。
The problem of possible genetic damage to human populations from radiation exposures, including those resulting from the fallout from testing of atomic weapons, has quite properly claimed much popular attention in recent years.
人类受到各种辐射后，如原子武器试验的散落物所造成的辐射，基因可能会遭到损伤，近年来这一问题理所当然地引起了人们的广泛重视。
此句虽然有33个单词，但句子主干仅为黑体部分，或者再精简一些为“The problem has claimed attention.”
2.切分意群
意群是指句子中按意思和结构划分出的各个成分，每一个成分即称为一个意群。英文一个句子中常常不止一个意群，而是有多个意群。这要求我们在理清主干后，要切分意群。仍以上句为例：
The problem of possible genetic damage to human populations from radiation exposures, // including those resulting from the fallout from testing of atomic weapons, // has quite properly claimed much popular attention in recent years.
双斜线将句子切分为三个意群，分别是：
人类受到各种辐射后基因可能会遭到损伤 //
（包括）原子武器试验的散落物所造成的辐射 //
近年来这一问题理所当然地引起了人们的广泛重视。
人类受到各种辐射后基因可能会遭到损伤 //
（包括）原子武器试验的散落物所造成的辐射 //

3.选择词义
词汇是语言文字的基石，而词汇又多有多义现象存在，这要求译者灵活选用合适的词汇含义，不能生搬硬套，或者胡编乱造。以下为1863年美国时任总统林肯发表著名的葛底斯堡演说中的选节：
“……that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
“……我们要在这里下定最大的决心，不让这些死者白白牺牲——要使这个国家在上帝保佑下得到新生——要使这个民有、民治、民享的政府永世长存。”
通过对比黑体部分，可以发现，原文的of、by、for三个介词转译为了译文中的有、治、享三个动词。
4.调整语序
中英文的叙事习惯也有不同之处：中文先条件后结果；英文先结果后条件。
The era of blatant discrimination ended in the 1960s through the courageous actions （of thousand of blacks participating in peaceful marches and sit-ins,）【to force Southern states to implement the Federal desegregation laws in schools and public accommodations.】
黑体部分是句子主干：The era ended through the courageous actions in the 1960s；
圆括号（）内为actions的方式：of thousand of blacks participating in peaceful marches and sit-ins；
方括号【】内为actions的目的：to force Southern states to implement the Federal desegregation laws in schools and public accommodations。
中文的叙述习惯是“时间+方式/目的+结果”。按照这一语序调整后，译文如下：
20世纪60年代，千千万万的黑人参加了和平示威和静坐活动，他们的英勇行动迫使南方各州执行联邦政府关于在学校和公共场所废除种族隔离的法律，从而结束了公然歧视黑人的时代。
