屈 原

操吴戈兮被犀甲，

车错毂兮短兵接。

旌蔽日兮敌若云，

矢交坠兮士争先。

凌余阵兮躐余行，

左骖殪兮右刃伤。

霾两轮兮絷四马，

援玉枹兮击鸣鼓。

天时怼兮威灵怒，

严杀尽兮弃原野。

出不入兮往不反，

平原忽兮路超远。

带长剑兮挟秦弓，

首虽离兮心不惩。

诚既勇兮又以武，

终刚强兮不可凌。

身既死兮神以灵，

魂魄毅兮为鬼雄。

QU Yuan(C. 340 BC-278BC), from Noble County of Chu in the Late Warring States period. He once assisted King Huai of Chu, serving as a royal councilor, minister of etiquettes and so on. In the reign of King Qingxiang of Chu he was exiled to the River Ruan and the River Xiang areas in today’s Hunan Province for a long time. Hearing about the conquest of Ying, the capital, Qu Yuan committed suicide by jumping into the River Miluo. He is remembered forWoebegone, Asking Heaven, Nine Cantos, Nine Odes and so on.

Rhino armor I wear, a spear I wave;

Hub to hub, the foe’s knives and swords I brave.

The enemies like clouds, the flags shade the sun;

Arrows fall down and soldiers vie to run.

Our front invaded, our weapons clashed,

The leftist three steeds killed, the rightist slashed.

The two wheels trapped, the four steeds fall flat;

Drumsticks clasped fast, o the drum is thumped at.

It’s all dark o, the ghost’s with anger filled;

Deserted afield are those cruelly killed.

They’ve been off for long, o not back they are;

The plain is vast, o the road rolls afar.

Carrying a sword long and a bow strong,

Head and trunk apart, o unchanged the heart.

O so brave and vigorous with might,

This great power o no enemy dare slight.

Though you’ve died, your spirit is never gone;

Of souls and ghosts, you are the bravest one.
